February is Gum Disease Awareness Month

Did you know that February is Gum Disease Awareness Month? It’s true, and it’s an excellent opportunity for Aspen Dental and our team of skilled dentists to educate the public about gum disease. We’ll help you learn everything you need to know about gum disease, including why it’s essential to be aware of it and how you can protect yourself from it.

What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease in Denver, CO —also known as periodontal disease—is an infection of the tissues that surround and support your teeth. It’s caused by bacteria in plaque, which builds up on your teeth if they aren’t properly cleaned. If left untreated, gum disease can lead to severe problems such as tooth loss and even systemic health issues like stroke and heart attack. That’s why it’s essential to be aware of the signs and take steps to prevent gum disease.

The Two Basic Gum Disease Types

Gingivitis is an early gum disease stage. It is often caused by a buildup of plaque on the teeth, which leads to irritation and redness in the gum tissue. Common symptoms include bleeding when brushing the teeth or eating food, swollen gums, and bad breath. With proper care, gingivitis can be reversed, so don’t put off visiting your dentist – they’re here to help you get back healthy gums faster! It is an inflammation of the gums and should be taken seriously as it can lead to more severe dental issues.

Periodontitis is a more advanced gum disease stage. In this case, the gum tissue and supporting bone that holds your teeth in place start to break down. Periodontitis can cause gum recession and tooth loss. Common symptoms include gum tenderness, receding gums, persistent bad breath, and loose teeth.

How Can I Protect Myself From Gum Disease?

The best way to protect yourself from gum disease is by practicing good oral hygiene. Good oral hygiene means brushing twice a day for two minutes each time, flossing once per day, and visiting our team every six months for a checkup. Dr. Rossow, Dr. Noce, Dr. Neal, Dr. Neal, and their team will be able to spot signs of gum disease early on so that treatment can begin immediately if necessary. Additionally, make sure you are eating a balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables; limiting sugary foods; avoiding tobacco products; drinking plenty of water; and using mouthwash daily as recommended by your dentist or hygienist. Doing all these things will help keep your mouth healthy!
